Unsticking That Stuck Window

How many of you have had this happen to you? An older window is stuck shut due to paint? And how many of you and jabbed at it and yanked and pulled to get it open, only to end up damaging the window? It doesn’t have to be this hard. Listen up!

When a window gets stuck shut, please try to resist the urge to force it open. If you do so you could possibly crack the sash frame or shatter the glass instead and that would not be good. You really need to resort to a safer method. First of all, wear leather work gloves and safety goggles. Now, push a 4 to 6 inch wide, stiff-blade putty knife into the joint between the sash and the interior stop – the thin, vertical wood strip nailed to each side jamb. You should also insert the putty knife into the joint at the top and bottom of the sash. Forcing the knife blade into the joints will cut any spots that have been adhered with dried paint. Now, to raise the sash, use the handles along to bottom sash rail and push up. Make sure you never lift a sash with one hand placed in the center of the upper rail because it may make it crack.

As a window installation contractor and repairman, I have seen my fair share of window problems. If you have any questions about troubleshooting window problems, please give me a call.
